In a move that has already stirred debate across the watch world, Audemars Piguet and Swatch have officially unveiled their long-rumoured collaboration: the Royal Pop Collection.
Revealed on May 13, 2026, the collection will go on sale from May 16, 2026, at selected Swatch stores worldwide, with purchases limited to one watch per person, per store, per day.
But this is not the Royal Oak-inspired wristwatch many collectors expected. Instead, the AP x Swatch release arrives as a bold series of eight Bioceramic pocket watches, combining the unmistakable design language of Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak with the playful modularity of Swatch’s 1980s POP line.
The result is the Royal Pop – a colourful, unconventional and deliberately disruptive take on one of the most recognisable silhouettes in modern watchmaking. The watches feature Royal Oak-inspired codes, including the octagonal bezel, eight visible screws and a “Petite Tapisserie”-style dial, but reinterpret them through Swatch’s more accessible and experimental design universe.

The collection comprises eight models: Otto Rosso, Huit Blanc, Green Eight, Blaue Acht, Làn Ba, Otg Roz, Ocho Negro and Orenji Hachi. The number eight is central to the collection’s identity, referencing the eight screws of the Royal Oak bezel while also giving each model a global, colour-led personality.
Technically, the Royal Pop is powered by a hand-wound mechanical movement derived from Swatch’s SISTEM51 platform. Reports indicate a power reserve of around 90 hours, giving the collection a mechanical heart rather than a purely fashion-led identity. Each watch is designed to be worn or displayed in multiple ways, whether carried as a pocket watch, attached to a lanyard, clipped to a bag, or placed on a stand as a desk clock.

The collaboration arrives after weeks of speculation, much of it fuelled by online teasers and AI-generated mock-ups that suggested a more traditional Royal Oak-style wristwatch. The final reveal has therefore landed with a mix of surprise, admiration and division. For some, the Royal Pop is a clever refusal to do the obvious. For others, it may feel like a missed opportunity to bring the Royal Oak directly to a wider audience. Either way, it has already achieved what Swatch collaborations do best: it has made the watch world talk.
The AP x Swatch release also follows the enormous cultural impact of Swatch’s earlier partnerships with Omega and Blancpain, which helped create a new category of hype-driven, accessible Swiss watch collaborations. This time, however, the stakes feel different. Audemars Piguet is one of the most prestigious names in haute horlogerie, and the Royal Oak remains one of the most influential luxury sports watches ever created. Bringing that design language into Swatch’s playful Bioceramic world is both commercially daring and symbolically powerful.
Audemars Piguet has also stated that 100 per cent of its proceeds from the collaboration will go towards an initiative supporting the preservation and transmission of watchmaking savoir-faire, with a focus on rare skills and the next generation of horological talent. This gives the project a deeper industry purpose beyond queues, resale chatter and social media buzz.
Whether the Royal Pop becomes another MoonSwatch-style phenomenon remains to be seen. Early signs suggest demand will be high, with reports of enthusiasts already preparing for in-store launches in key markets.
What is certain is that AP and Swatch have chosen not to produce the safest possible collaboration. They have not simply placed a Royal Oak on a Swatch strap and called it a day. Instead, they have taken one of watchmaking’s most sacred design codes and turned it into something bright, portable, playful and unexpected.
