Etihad bans certain Macbook Pro laptops from checked-in luggage
Etihad Airways has banned certain MacBook Pro laptops from checked-in luggage, following Apple’s recall of some older models because of a fire risk if batteries overheat. Earlier, US airline safety regulators also took a decision to prohibit certain MacBook Pro laptops on flights.
In a statement released on Thursday, the airline said, “Following a safety-related recall of some Apple MacBook Pro laptop computers, Etihad Airways has banned the carriage of MacBook Pro computers in checked luggage.”
According to Etihad, the laptops would, however, been allowed as cabin luggage, provided the models subject to Apple’s recall were switched off throughout the flight. It also added that the laptops cannot be charged during the flight.
The restriction – which follows in the same line as many other global airlines such as Singapore Airlines – has also been extended to Ethiad’s Cargo division, with bulk shipments of these devices being banned. TUI Group Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, Air Italy and Air Transat have also banned the laptops from being carried as cargo.

Earlier this month, the EU Aviation Safety Agency issued a warning to airlines in the region asking them to adhere to 2017 rules that require devices with recalled lithium-ion batteries to be switched off and not used during flights.
Apple has recalled some models of the 15-inch MacBook Pros sold between September 2015 and February 2017, citing overheating of battery concerns and a fire safety risk.
