Electricity Tariffs Reduced for Residential Use – What It Means for You
Residential electricity customers in Oman will benefit from reduced electricity tariffs during the summer months of 2026, following a decision by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) to ease the financial impact of higher power consumption caused by rising temperatures.
Residential electricity customers in Oman will benefit from reduced electricity tariffs during the summer months of 2026, following a decision by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR) to ease the financial impact of higher power consumption caused by rising temperatures.
The tariff reduction will apply to single basic residential accounts from May to August 2026. APSR has also directed licensed electricity companies not to disconnect residential electricity services during this period and to provide flexible payment plans for subscribers with outstanding arrears.
Under the approved mechanism, the reduction will be applied across three consumption brackets. In May, customers will receive a 15 percent reduction on consumption up to 4,000 kWh, a 10 percent reduction on consumption between 4,001 and 6,000 kWh, and a 5 percent reduction on consumption above 6,000 kWh.
The support will increase during the peak summer months of June, July and August, with reductions rising to 20 percent for the 0–4,000 kWh bracket, 15 percent for the 4,001–6,000 kWh bracket, and 10 percent for consumption above 6,000 kWh.
For households, this means the higher the summer usage, the greater the absolute saving on the bill. However, the reduction is applied according to consumption slabs, not as one flat discount on the entire bill.
How the discount works
For example, if a household consumes 5,000 kWh in a month, the first 4,000 kWh falls under the first slab, while the remaining 1,000 kWh falls under the second slab.
Based on the standard primary residential tariff structure of 14 baisa per kWh for 0–4,000 kWh, 18 baisa per kWh for 4,001–6,000 kWh, and approximately 32 baisa per kWh above 6,000 kWh, the savings can be illustrated as follows.
These examples calculate only the electricity consumption charge and do not include any other fees, adjustments, or arrears.
| Monthly Consumption | Normal Bill | May Bill After Reduction | May Saving | June–August Bill After Reduction | June–August Saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3,000 kWh | OMR 42.000 | OMR 35.700 | OMR 6.300 | OMR 33.600 | OMR 8.400 |
| 5,000 kWh | OMR 74.000 | OMR 63.800 | OMR 10.200 | OMR 60.100 | OMR 13.900 |
| 7,000 kWh | OMR 124.000 | OMR 110.400 | OMR 13.600 | OMR 104.200 | OMR 19.800 |
| 10,000 kWh | OMR 220.000 | OMR 201.600 | OMR 18.400 | OMR 190.600 | OMR 29.400 |
What this means for a typical household
A household using 3,000 kWh in May would pay around OMR 35.700 instead of OMR 42.000, saving about OMR 6.300 for the month.
If the same household uses 3,000 kWh in June, July or August, the bill would reduce further to around OMR 33.600, giving a saving of about OMR 8.400 per month.
For a larger household consuming 7,000 kWh, the normal consumption charge would be around OMR 124.000. With the May reduction, this would fall to around OMR 110.400. During June, July and August, it would fall further to around OMR 104.200.
In simple terms, the move offers direct relief during the hottest months of the year, when air-conditioning and cooling needs push household electricity use significantly higher. The additional instruction to avoid disconnections and provide instalment options also gives families more flexibility in managing summer electricity bills.
