From actors to activists, a number of household names were lost this year. Here’s a look at some of those who we lost in 2019:

Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld was a fashion designer and creative director of Chanel and Fendi. Known for his signature white hair and black sunglasses, Lagerfeld has been attributed to modern revival of Chanel.

Arun Jaitley

Arun Jaitley was the former Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of India from 2014 to 2019. He oversaw the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax which brought the country under one GST regime, demonetisation, and introduction of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.

I.M. Pei

I.M. Pei is perhaps most well known for the design of the iconic glass-and-steel pyramid for the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The Chinese-born American architect is noted for his large, elegantly designed urban buildings and complexes characterised by crisp geometric designs.

Doris Day

Hollywood actress and singer, Doris Day known for lighthearted movies like Pillow Talk passed away at the age of 97 in the month of May. From 1948 to 1968, Day appeared in 39 films.

Robert Mugabe

The Zimbabwean independence icon who served as prime minister of Zimbabwe in 1980 and then as the country’s president from 1987 until his resignation in 2017. He died in September 2019 in Singapore where he’d been receiving treatment for cancer.

Luke Perry

TV star Luke Perry was best known for his role in the 90s teen drama, Beverly Hills: 90210. His sudden demise shocked costars and fans alike. “I am so heart broken and at a loss for words,” tweeted Carteris, who played Andrea Zuckerman in 90210. “You my friend were a mighty soul and have left your mark.”
