Modern Luxury: On And Off the Road With The New Mercedes-Benz GLS
As the S-Class of SUVs, the new Mercedes-Benz GLS embodies luxury, confidence and intelligence with the character of an off-roader. The interior is a synthesis of modern, luxurious aesthetics, hallmark SUV practicality, and digital high-tech. The new GLS is Mercedes-Benz’s largest and most luxurious SUV and, above all, offers more: more space, more comfort, and more luxury. Starting from OMR 39,995, the class-leading SUV shows off an impressive exterior, a spacious interior, agile handling and a strong performance off the beaten track.
Exterior Power with a Luxurious Interior
The design aesthetics are based on the confident presence created by the GLS’s impressive dimensions. With an extended wheelbase, the vehicle is beneficially longer with an understated, elegant side design. The front section of the new GLS exudes presence and power with an upright, octagonal radiator grille, the prominent, chrome-plated underguard and the bonnet with two powerdomes. The luxury SUV also boasts MULTIBEAM LED headlamps and a large touchscreen MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, allowing all the GLS comfort features to be controlled from the driver’s seat. From the inside, the GLS provides the comfort of a Mercedes-Benz luxury saloon with the robustly progressive detailing of an SUV. The dashboard boasts an impressively sized screen unit while the dashboard support and integral trim element flow into the door panels. The prominently wide, raised centre console creates a robust contrast with the free-floating appearance of the dashboard. With two prominent grab handles on the centre console, the SUV oozes good ergonomics, fluent leather surfaces and flush-fitting sunblinds. A push of a button is all that is required to stow away the third-row seats and make full use of the 2400-litre boot space. While the rear rows fold completely flat, it is also possible to fold down all the seats simultaneously, forming part of a flat, practical load area. Another push of a button lowers the boot sill, making it easier to load heavy items.
High-Tech Elegance and Stylish Comfort
Luxury in the new GLS is shared generously among all passengers. The Rear Comfort package includes a 7-inch Android tablet that allows control of all the comfort and entertainment functions. It can also be used to control the five-zone automatic climate control for the rear seats and the driver can assume control of all options and features from his or her seat at any time, of course. The centre console also offers a wireless-charging compartment for smartphones and additional USB ports. Optional additions include luxury seats with lumbar massage function and climate control. The MBUX Rear Seat Entertainment System includes two touchscreens that allow passengers in the second row to enjoy movies or music, use the integrated web browser, call up and input trip information, or play their own media. The GLS is equipped with the latest generation of the infotainment system. Upgrades include two large high-resolution screens with brilliant graphics and the intuitive control structure. The optional MBUX Interior Assistant also allows intuitive operation of different comfort and functions by movement recognition, including simple hand gestures. A unique feature of MBUX is its learning capability thanks to artificial intelligence. With its predictive functions, it anticipates what the user would like next, such as a regular weekly phone call or favourite radio programme.
Outstandingly Intelligent Powertrain
The high aspirations of the new Mercedes-Benz GLS are clearly apparent in its powerful six and eight-cylinder engines, delivering motoring comfort and effortlessly superior power. In all variants of the new GLS, power is transmitted by the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with the broad ratio spread of gears one to nine. When driving on the road, and particularly when cornering, the two fully networked transfer cases with torque-on-demand function allow a further improvement in handling safety and agility. The GLS comes with the enhanced AIRMATIC air suspension system with Adaptive Damping System Plus fitted as standard. All components have been enhanced compared with the previous generation, and the air suspension keeps the car at the same level, regardless of the load on board. The optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension, combined with the newly developed AIRMATIC air suspension, provide better ride comfort and agility, plus new functions such as recovery mode. This is currently the only system on the market that can individually control spring and damping forces at each wheel. The GLS also has the curve inclination function CURVE, allowing cornering in three stages with practically no centrifugal force. All in all, the new GLS makes an exceptional level of comfort possible and supports the claim of Mercedes-Benz to build the world’s most intelligent SUV suspension.
