Avengers: Endgame Passes $2 Billion Mark in Second Weekend

Walt Disney’s epic Avengers: Endgame surpassed the $2 billion mark in ticket sales in its second weekend in theaters, showing fans can’t get enough of the superhero mashup.
It’s now one of only five films ever to cross that threshold and is the second-highest grossing movie of all time.
The Marvel feature brought in $145.8 million in US and Canadian theaters this weekend, researcher Comscore estimated Sunday in an email. That just missed the second-weekend record of $149.2 million held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, another film from the Disney stable.
Analysts were predicting about $153 million in revenue for Endgame over the three days.
Key Insights
The popularity of the film became evident from its first days in theaters. After just one week, Endgame had become the fifth-highest-grossing movie of all-time, behind such hits as Avatar and Titanic.
Some analysts predict it will ultimately claim the No. 1 spot.
The movie has provided a huge boost to theaters, which have seen revenue decline so far this year. Boxoffice Pro projects sales for this weekend’s top 10 pictures will increase by 29 per cent to 37 per cent over a year earlier.
Three new films opened in wide release this weekend, rounding out the rest of the top four spots: The Intruder, a thriller from Sony Pictures; Long Shot, a comedy from Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.; and UglyDolls, an animated feature from STX Entertainment.
