Carbonate Matrix Stimulation – Poorly Understood & Under-Optimized Technique: Murtaza Ziauddin, Schlumberger

Murtaza Ziauddin, an Advisor on Matrix Stimulation and Production Chemistry at Schlumberger, made a presentation for SPE Oman Section as part of SPE Distinguished Lecturer Programme. His presentation focused on ‘Carbonate Matrix Stimulation: A Poorly Understood & Often Under-Optimized Technique’ was held on 13 April at PDO Oil and Gas Exhibition Centre, Muscat.
Matrix stimulation treatments in carbonate reservoirs are generally considered low risk. Production increases from these treatments are routine and the advantages of these treatments are perceived to be high. However, many treatments realize only a small fraction of the true well potential. The lecture started with a brief introduction to matrix stimulation in carbonates and describe typical design elements. It was followed by design challenges, such as treatments in long heterogeneous intervals, fractured reservoirs, and mature reservoirs. The influence of rock type, treatment fluid type, and operating conditions were also discussed. The available technologies for fluid placement were presented in the context of formation complexity and the length of producing interval.
Murtaza Ziauddin has more than 18 years of production engineering experience and has co-authored three SPE books. His most recent book is, Chemistry for Enhancing Production”. He has authored 27 technical papers and holds 14 patents. Ziauddin earned a BS from the University of Houston and a PhD from the University of Minnesota, both in Chemical Engineering.
