Safeguarding Oman’s Identity in Digital Platforms: A Collective National Duty

Social media platforms have evolved to play a pivotal role beyond mere entertainment and personal communication, becoming influential tools for self-expression, idea exchange, shaping collective consciousness, articulating cultural values, and defining national identity in the digital sphere.

This report highlights the importance of preserving Omani societal values, promoting responsible digital behavior grounded in accuracy, constructive criticism, respect for privacy, and support for meaningful content. It emphasizes the necessity of adhering to authentic Omani values and etiquette – not merely as commendable individual choices but as an urgent national challenge requiring close collaboration among all segments of society.

In this context, Dr. Sabra Saif Al Harrasi, an academic and educational researcher, told Oman News Agency (ONA): “When the Sultanate of Oman is mentioned, morality precedes borders, and demeanor precedes the name. It is an identity deeply rooted in a human heritage acknowledged by prophecy before history books recorded it, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘If you were to visit the people of Oman, they would neither insult nor strike you.’ In this prophetic testimony, he combined noble conduct and refined speech—the essence of Omani character, marked by wisdom, tolerance, and dignity.”

She added that this demeanor was not merely individual behavior but reflected in the state’s policies and choices, making Omani politics a sincere expression of a balanced identity that prioritizes wisdom over clamor, responsible openness over recklessness, and mutual understanding over clashing interests. Just as ethics are inherited, so are stances transmitted, and this collective upbringing has forged a unique model of behavior, decision-making, and balance.

She explained that digital platforms have become incubators of taste, directors of thought, and shapers of behavior. Thus, reintroducing this Omani demeanor in the virtual space is no longer just an educational necessity but a core aspect of cultural security. Content presented to the youth should not be disconnected from their history or distant from their spirit but should cope with an identity shaped over centuries, expressing a society that sees ethics as capital.

She noted that when reflecting on Omani values that should be present in digital content, we are not reinventing principles but re-presenting them in a contemporary context. The Omani demeanor—characterized by composure, self-restraint, and quiet refinement—should be evident in expression, discussions, reactions, and opinion-making.

On social media’s impact on Omani identity, Dr. Amal Talib Al Jahwary, a researcher specializing in media and cultural affairs, explained that social media’s influence on identity – particularly Omani identity – is dual, depending on the content these platforms offer.

She noted that these tools can be harnessed to reinforce constructive ideas, promote citizenship values, and facilitate knowledge exchange and openness, contributing to a positive national image. Conversely, she said, social media can become a negative tool and a significant challenge due to exposure to diverse ideas and cultures, which may inversely affect national identity as societies and generations absorb foreign influences, potentially diluting their cultural uniqueness.

Regarding traditional media’s role compared to social media in promoting Omani culture, she pointed out that under Oman’s legal media framework, both traditional and modern media adhere to professionalism in delivering messages and content. Aligned with Oman Vision 2040 to foster media that strengthens national identity, these platforms compete to produce content that enhances societal awareness of preserving national identity and embodies Omani demeanor in social practices.

She clarified that these media highlight national identity across visual, audio, print, and digital platforms, as reflected in content from both government and private outlets. This does not negate traditional media’s unique and vital role in preserving and transmitting Omani culture across generations.

Dr. Amal emphasized that media plays a crucial role in safeguarding national identity through its messaging, which inherently incorporates cultural elements. With social media’s rise, media responsibility doubles – promoting positive content that leverages these platforms to reinforce national values and cultural heritage innovatively while educating youth on preserving their identity amid social media challenges.

On her turn, Qoot Al-Quloob Azzan Al Hussaini, a social media activist, noted that social media platforms have become daily pulpits shaping opinions and opening windows to people’s concerns and opportunities.

She stated that social media actors must be ambassadors of their nation, showcasing genuine Omani societal values and adhering to Omani etiquette. True ambassadors, she affirmed, respect their identity even when addressing the world, and a genuine influencer presents behavioral and ethical models rooted in Omani authenticity – without pretense.

She added: “Through these platforms, I believe we can reshape information dissemination and broaden perspectives. My role is simplifying complex economic and social concepts in accessible language – especially for youth – without sacrificing accuracy or oversimplifying. I am currently working to build an environment enabling content creators to deliver these messages more professionally, as institutional development of digital media is now a necessity, not a choice.”

She noted that influence on social media is not a privilege of visibility but a moral and societal responsibility, especially amid rapid youth challenges. Neutrality is not an option when a simple post may alter someone’s path or inspire knowledge.

Preserving Omani identity in this vast digital space is not a luxury but a shared national responsibility – beginning with families, extending to content creators, and reinforced by institutions like education and media. It hinges on awareness, role models, and commitment to authentic Omani values in every word published, every piece of content produced, and every interaction built in the virtual realm – ensuring Omani identity remains the compass guiding all endeavors.
