SOHAR Port and Sohar Free zone is ideally positioned to serve as a food trade hub between Iran and Brazil, Jamal T Aziz, Deputy CEO said. He made the remarks in a meeting on Iran-Oman trade that took place at the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mine and Agriculture in Tehran on Wednesday.
According to Aziz, Brazil ranks number one in supplying food products to Iran and other Arabian Gulf countries, followed by India and Australia. In 2014 Brazil exported five million tons of food products to Iran, which were transferred through Jebel Ali Port in the United Arab Emirates to Iran.
Aziz added: “We will offer a trade model to Iran to import all its food products from Brazil through Sohar Free Trade Zone.” Sohar Port’s modern infrastructure, connectivity, tax and customs waivers, as well as advantageous lending terms, were added benefits, he noted. Mohsen Tharabee, head of the Iran-Oman chamber of commerce, said Omani ports were suitable conduits for international trade with Iran. After all, the Sultanate has been a friend of Iran for several years, and has never pursued any hostile action against its national interests, he noted. Furthermore, low inflation coupled with its stable political environment made the Sultanate ideal for Iranian investors.”
