Turn left or right? The women decide
June 4th, 2018 marked a significant date that may probably go down in history. It was a day of celebration as the first batch of Saudi women received their driving licenses.
Women in Saudi were banned from driving for decades. Families would have to employ chauffeurs for female relatives to get anywhere. However, all of that changed earlier this month.
According to the BBC, ten Saudi women swapped their foreign licenses for a Saudi license and become the first women to hold driving licenses in the country. A video on Twitter went viral of the Saudi officials handing over the first driving license to a woman.

The change towards the driving rules for women was announced last September. All credit to the dissolvement of the ban belongs to the Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, who believes in these liberalisation methods to modernise the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
24th June 2018, marks another essential date because after twenty days of earning their driver’s license, women could legally drive in the cities of the country for the first time.
Various reports suggested that women in Saudi were seen driving down the streets, cheering themselves and their friends at midnight. They were gathered in a secluded area to celebrate their first official and legal ride with full control of the wheel.
The Government looks at the removal of the ban as advancements in women rights in Saudi Arabia. The BBC also mentions that Saudi authorities expected at least 2000 women to have their driver’s license by the time the ban is lifted.
Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia also broke the cinema ban after 35 years. The country welcomed their first cinema with the blockbuster Black Panther enabling both invited men and women to enjoy the screening of the movie.
