Snapchat launches new AR experience with renowned artist Damien Hirst
Inspired by the work of renowned artist Damien Hirst, Snapchatters will now use the technology of augmented reality (AR) to create a fresh artistic canvas. The latest Snapchat lens helps everyone to create their own “Spin” painting in Hirst’s iconic style right from home, spraying interactive paint with millions of potential variations onto a rotating canvas.
Snapchatters can upload their works to “Our Story” instead of a live art show, so that the whole Snapchat group may see what they’ve created, producing a shared interactive gallery of Spin paintings.
Snapchat has worked with Leaders in Wellness to support its COVID-19 recovery activities on this trip. Health Partners is a social advocacy group that aims to help disadvantaged people through the pandemic and to improve treatment for millions of patients around the globe.
Commenting about this project, Hirst said: “It’s incredible to collaborate with Snapchat on this completely super spin art lens to make it possible for millions of users to create their own spin paintings straight through their mobile. I’m very delighted that this relationship actually benefits Partners in Health, a wonderful and forward-thinking organization that serves families across the developing world.
Hirst first started working with spin painting in 1992, and all museum guests were encouraged to create their own free sketches on a spin drawing system created from a drill at the first show of the series; democratizing the painting creation experience.
