Lionel Messi Says His ‘Retirement is Approaching’
Lionel Messi may be nearing the end of his career. The Barcelona star made the remarks during a speech on Monday in Paris after winning a record-breaking sixth Ballon d’Or award. The Ballon d’Or recognizes the best male and female players in the world.
“I’m aware of how old I am. And I enjoy these moments so much because I know that retirement is approaching. Time flies…” said Messi, via a statement.
“Right now I feel better than ever on a physical and a personal level, and I hope I can go on for a lot longer.”

Messi has a clause in his contract that would allow him to walk away from Barcelona at the end of the season. Barcelona is working with Messi on a contract extension, which would be his 10th professional deal with the club.
