Suhar Airport is built within the proximity of the major commercial, industrial and economic centres of Sohar, including the Sohar Port and Free Zone

Suhar Airport is the third hub for international airlines in the Sultanate after Muscat and Salalah. Situated about 13km northwest of Sohar City Centre, the airport provides an alternative, quicker route for travelers wishing to access Sohar and the north of Oman. The airport also serves as a new gateway for cargo and courier traffic in northern Oman and, in the future, will ease congestion pressure on Sultan Qaboos Port in Muscat. In addition, Suhar airport will serve as an emergency alternative to Muscat Airport for passengers and cargo coming into the Sultanate.

The airport is built within the proximity of the major commercial, industrial and economic centers of Sohar, including the Sohar Port and Sohar Free Zone. It will complement the plans for a major expressway and rail network, which will underpin the port city’s eventual transformation into a major industrial and economic hub on Al-Batinah coast.

Poised for higher growth

From a modest-sized domestic airport, Suhar Airport is poised for a higher growth, thanks to an uptick in the number of flights. While Salam Air started its operations from Suhar Airport in June 2017 while Air Arabia commenced its flights in July 2017. Qatar Airways which launched its inaugural flight to Sohar in August 2017, currently operates daily flights to Sohar, in addition to Muscat and Salalah.

Operations by all the three airlines out of Sohar are giving a strong boost to business and tourism in this industrial port city. In Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC) signed an agreement to commence the operations of three new airlines, out of which one will be from Suhar Airport.

Oman Aviation Academy (OAA), the nation’s first aviation training institution, is preparing to shortly break ground on its campus within Suhar Airport. The Aviation Academy is proposed to be a fully integrated campus featuring classrooms equipped with state of the art aviation training technology. The facility will also exploit its location within Suhar Airport to provide real-time training conditions for the cadets. The facility will include 3,000 square metres of aircraft hangar in addition to 4,000 square metres for students’ housing, a tower and a taxiway. The academy is expected to train 153 candidates once all facilities are in place.

Oman Airports is a government owned company, responsible for the management and operations of the civil airports in the Sultanate. The infrastructure of the airports such as the terminal buildings, cargo building, runway, apron, car parking and other facilities are directly under Oman Airports management. The total staff strength at Oman Airports is more than 1000 employees with an Omanisation level of approximately 91 per cent.
