The New Canon EOS R Review
As a photographer with 20 years of experience in the field, it’s safe to say that I have used my fair share of cameras, and consequently, have a few favourite picks. The most recent of them happens to be the Canon 5D Mark IV. I have been using the mark IV model for three years, which offers excellent performance and versatility, and have never felt the need for anything more. However, I used the new EOS R for a week, courtesy of Canon, and its revolutionary mirrorless system has swayed my opinion.
The first thing you will notice is the exceptional Ergonomics. The camera, despite its smaller size, invokes the same feel as the DSLR.
Another one of its noticeable features is the electronic viewfinder that has the distinct advantage of showing you a live feed of your exposure and camera settings at all times. This “What you see is what you get” approach allows for much greater control over your exposure and final image.
Key Features
With 30-megapixel Dual Pixel CMOS sensor, the camera also has 5 fps burst shooting with continuous AF, a 3.69 Million dot electronic viewfinder with 0.76x magnification alongside a fully-articulated 3.15″ touchscreen, One SD card slot, and 4k video with 10-bit output externally over HDMI.
The New RF-Mount
With a large 54mm inner diameter and a short flange-back distance of just 20mm, the new RF mount allows Canon’s engineers to construct optics with larger rear elements and better performance, such as the superb RF 50mm f/1.2L USM
Adaptive Accessory
Canon EOS R comes with a Mount Adapter EF-EOS R as an accessory, a simple adapter which allows you to use all Canon EF, EF-S and TS-E lenses on RF-mount cameras.
RF Lens Variety
The new RF lens is sure to blow your mind with its sharpness and colour reproduction. The programmable ring on the lens to control exposure, ISO, etc is a unique and innovative feature offered in the new RF lens. The 35mm f/1.8 macro lens, 50mm f/1.2 prime lens, RF 85mm F1.2L USM for portraits, 24-105mm f/4 L-series zoom and the Super-fast and bright 28-70mm f/2 L-series lens will certainly not disappoint.
Video Features
The EOS R uses Canon’s signature color science and can shoot in C-Log which will give more freedom in post-production,
and definitely gives you more than enough to work with in terms of video settings as follows
Video Format:
3840 x 2160p at 23.98/24/29.97 fps
1920 x 1080p at 23.98/24/29.97/59.94 fps
1280 x 720p at 29.97/59.94/120 fps
Key Features:
Sensor: 30.3 MP CMOS Sensor
Sensor Size: 36 x 24mm
Resolution: 6720 x 4480
Native ISO Sensitivity: 100-40,000
Processor: DIGIC 8

The new Canon EOS R has opened a new window of photography for me. Its ability to remain adaptive with older camera styles, whilst still managing to innovate with its functions, is truly ground-breaking.
