The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) has launched a new campaign for Earth Hour, a worldwide grassroots movement that takes place annually and this year it will be on March 19th from 8:30-9:30 pm.
Starting March 1st, ESO will kick start a media campaign in the build up to a special Earth Hour event for families that will be held on the big day itself. Earth Hour’s theme this year will focus on promoting climate action, highlighting the need to tackle climate change and global warming on an international scale.
Lamees Daar, Executive Director of ESO, said, “From the world’s warming oceans to the extinction of species and the increase of severe natural disasters, global warming is a reality that mankind is facing every day. Together, the world made history by adopting the landmark COP21 agreement and we must now unite again to preserve our environments for future generations. After all, if we do not act, who will?”
Spearheading Earth Hour in Oman, ESO announced that this year’s family event will be held at the Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club from 4:30 – 7:00pm on the 19th of March 2016. The gathering, which will be open to the public, will feature educational games, live music, an E-Waste Collection Corner, and a variety of entertaining activities.
She added, “The Environment Society of Oman has been at the forefront of the fight against climate change in Oman since its inception, going above and beyond year-on-year to promote sustainable living. Once again, I would like to invite residents and companies across Oman to turn off their lights from 8.30 – 9.30pm on March 19th and unite with millions around the world to make this year’s Earth Hour the biggest yet.”
So far Oman LNG, Sohar Aluminium and Towell Engineering are supporting Oman’s Earth Hour as sponsors with in-kind support provided by TRACCS, Crown Plaza Muscat, Muscat Hills & Country Club and Averda. The Royal Opera House Muscat and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque will be switching off in support of the Earth Hour initiative. “We are still looking for more sponsors and urge companies who would like to support this campaign to get in touch with our office,” Lamees says.
Last year, the movement saw more than 620,000 individual acts around the world taken to tackle climate change, 10,400 monuments switch off for the hour, as well as participation from over 170 countries and territories.
