How Android Rose Up to Challenge Apple
The Android Vs iOS debate is perhaps as old as time. Without their respective software, iPhones and Android phones would be slabs of glass, metal and plastic.
When Android first launched, Steve Jobs called it a ‘rip-off’. But today, Android powered smartphones are the highest selling devices in the world.
In 2018, 1.4 billion smartphones were sold around the world. Versions of android powered more than 8 in 10 of them. And the credit goes to three forces:
- Google bought Android, offered it for free and add services
- Samsung came out with the first major android phone and became the world’s first smartphone maker
- China’s economic growth provided the perfect platform for gadgets to run Android software
Bloomberg Businessweek’s Jason Kelly looks at the rise and future of Android:
