Sohar Steel Group comprises three manufacturing units located at Sohar: Sharq Sohar Steel Rolling Mills and Middle East Conversion Industries that are located at Sohar Industrial Estate and Steel Melt Shop located at the Sohar Port Area
Sohar Steel Group started its operations in 1996 with Sharq Sohar Steel Rolling Mills, which is a major producer of new generation high strength reinforcement bars (rebars). Currently, Sohar Steel comprises three manufacturing units located at Sohar: Sharq Sohar Steel Rolling Mills and Middle East Conversion Industries (MECI) that are located at Sohar Industrial Estate (SIE) and Steel Melt Shop located at the Sohar Port Area (SIPC). The plants were built with technical collaboration from IDC, which is among the biggest industrial enterprises of Turkey and Aegean Region. Sohar Steel group companies are ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified and also produces CARES-UK Certified steel rebars and billets.
Sharq Sohar Steel Rolling Mills
Sharq Sohar Steel Rolling Mill (SSSRM), the flagship entity established in 1996, is a producer of ‘new generation’ high strength reinforcement bars. The unit is located in Sohar Industrial Estate of Oman, having easy access to both Oman and UAE. SSSRM has a capacity to produce of 300,000 tonnes per annum.
The production capacity is 300,000 MT per annum with a product mix of 8 mm to 32 mm high strength reinforcement bars confirming to BS, ASTM and SASO standards. The bars are conforming to the latest BS 4449:2005 standard (grade B500B). The products also have prestigious CARES certification by M/s UKAS, UK for the complete product range from 8 mm to 32 mm for both BS4449:2005 grade B500B and BS4449:1997 grade 460B.
Sharq Sohar Steel Mill is accredited with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications for the entire unit including testing facilities. Over the years the company has established its strong presence in Sultanate of Oman and other GCC countries.
Sohar Steel
Sohar Steel is located in a 250,000 square metre area in Sohar Industrial Port Companies (SIPC) which is adjacent to the sea port of Sohar. The plant is capable of producing 600,000 MT of Steel Billets and 500,000MT of Rebars annually. The plant also has a cut and bend services facility. The present plant facilities include Ultra High Power (UHP) Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) with 80 MT capacity, powered by 30 MVA transformer and Ladle Furnace (LF) of 5 MVA power. The 6 strand Caster of 6 metre radius can cast billet sizes of 100, 120 and 130 mm. Hydraulic shear is used for the automatic cutting of billets. The plant is capable of receiving scrap, DRI and HBI as raw material. The integrated rolling mill uses Bendotti walking beam furnace of 110MT per hour capacity.
Sohar Steel is equipped with modernised wet lab facilities and most modern type Spectrometer through which strict quality control measures are practiced to achieve the specified product quality standards. The company is accredited with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications for the entire unit including testing facilities.
Middle East Conversion Industries
Middle East Conversion Industries (MECI) is another unit of SSSRM consisting of an Epoxy Coating plant and a Weld Mesh plant. The plant is supplied by travelbeton SA of Italy, manufactured by Carlo Banfi SPA, Elind SPA and ZEUS Italy. The capacity of the plant is about 2500 tonnes.
The fusion bonded epoxy coating plant caters to the needs of construction industry primarily in Oman. Epoxy coated rebars are used by several construction companies to prevent the rusting and corrosion of rebars in specific conditions. MECI also produces welded steel mesh which is also a product preferred by many large scale construction companies.
