Oman – Belgium Ink MoU on Green Energy
Muscat: Oman and Belgium have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on green energy, particularly green hydrogen.
The MoU was signed between the Ministry of Energy and Minerals of the Sultanate and the Belgian Ministry of Energy. According to a press release, both parties want to promote and develop initiatives and projects in the field of green energy for mutual benefit.
According to the MoU, Oman and Belgium will work together on the green Hydrogen Sultanate anchor project “Hyport Duqm”. The agreement will support the collaboration between companies from two countries to create an international consortium for the production of green hydrogen.
The MOU also called for the implementation of standards for green certification and the interaction between universities, scientific research institutes and the private sector of both countries.
Hyport Duqm, the Sultanate’s strategic green hydrogen project in the Duqm Special Economic Zone, is a joint venture between DEME Concessions, based in Belgium, and OQ Alternative Energy of Oman.
In the first phase of the Hyport Duqm project, a 250 to 500 MW plant for green hydrogen is being developed in the Duqm special economic zone. The plant is scheduled to go online in 2026 and respond to global demand for green hydrogen and its derivatives.
