Beginning in the first quarter of 2020, Dubai will update parking meters to offer e-Parking tickets to replace the paper tickets currently to be shown on the windscreen or dashboard, declared Monday by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The RTA said it is ready to launch tickets for eParking that do not require users to show a paper ticket. Previously, e-tickets were only provided when parking payments were made via mParking SMS or RTA’s software. Nevertheless, the latest eParking pass, which can be generated using payment on the smart meters via a Nol card or coins, is not sent to the customer. It will be processed in the electronic system of the RTA, the RTA has explained.

“For this reason, advanced parking meters will be built over several phases from the first quarter of 2020 until the end of 2022,” RTA said in a statement.
It follows a trial test of upgrading existing parking meters to smart parking meters that offer away e-tickets at several locations.
Such smart parking meters are fitted with digital touch screens that enable users to enter vehicle information and have tickets for eParking provided.
In June 2018, Gulf News first focused on the launch of the smart parking program as part of the pilot test at Al Jafiliya.
Unlike the old meters that dispense paper tickets, the modern meters require users to key in vehicle plate number and parking period before selecting the payment method that could be either through coins or Nol cards. When making the payment, the customer has the right to print a paper receipt for the transaction
The paper certificate is just an acknowledgment of the user’s comparison cost and need not be put in the car. The authority said the project’s execution started after reviewing the public polls carried out during the pilot phase.
“RTA has given due consideration to the feedback from customers regarding cutting short the steps of accessing vehicle information with just a tap of a Nol token,” it said. This ensures that a Nol card used to pay a vehicle number for parking is connected to that vehicle in the smart system. The meter displays the vehicle information for making the next transfer next time Nol card is used.
