U.A.E. Allows Microsoft Skype for Business, Google Hangout

(Bloomberg) — The United Arab Emirates lifted restrictions on some programs that allow voice calls over the Internet, including Microsoft Skype for Business and Google Hangout, to help people work from home and avoid spreading the coronavirus.

Applications allowed on all networks in the country are: Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Blackboard
Applications compatible with fixed Internet networks are: Microsoft Skype for Business and Google Hangout
The applications are available until further notice, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said in a statement. The regulator said it will occasionally review the list of available applications.

The Gulf state, where 85% of the population are foreigners, blocks most applications that allow free voice calls over the Internet. The curbs have long been a grievance for expatriates who want to keep in touch with family and friends back home and work remotely.
