EU Presidents Officially Approve Regulations On ‘Vaccine Passports’
Brussels: The presidents of three main EU institutions officially approved a regulation for the COVID-19 vaccine certificate and signed it into active law. The law will be active beginning 1st of July, 2021 – across the EU.
The three presidents, David Sassoli and Ursula von der Leyen and the Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa – who is the current President of the Council, came together to state, “Our Union showed again that we work best when we work together. The EU Digital COVID Certificate Regulation was agreed between our institutions in the record time of 62 days. While we worked through the legislative process, we also built the technical backbone of the system, the EU gateway, which is live since June 1.”
While all EU states are to respect the certificates issued by each of the other member nations, the EU decided that the perks of holding the certificate, which shows that the holder is COVID free or has been vaccinated against it, will be given by each of the 27 individual members of the Union. Most governments will settle on issuing a waiver of Quarantine process.
The certificate is being issued to travellers who have been vaccinated with one of the vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency, those who have recently recovered from COVID-19, as well those who test negative for COVID-19. The Law is set to remain in effect until June 31st, 2022.
