What Is This Wind-Powered Giant That Just Arrived in Oman?

Marking a pivotal advancement in sustainable logistics, Asyad Shipping and Vale welcomed Sohar Max, the world’s first wind-assisted Valemax, on its first call to the Sultanate of Oman, delivering iron ore to Vale’s operations in Sohar. This milestone builds on a long-standing partnership between the industry giants focused on advancing vessel efficiency and lower-emission maritime transportation across the iron ore value chain.

Owned by Asyad Shipping and leased to Vale, Sohar Max is a 400,000 DWT ore carrier designed for high-capacity, deep-sea voyages across key trade corridors between Brazil, China, and the Middle East, and is fitted with five towering rotor sails, or Flettner rotors, developed by Anemoi Marine Technologies. Standing 35 meters tall and 5 meters in diameter, the cylindrical sails harness the Magnus effect to capture wind energy, generating additional thrust and reducing fuel consumption.

The rotor sails on Sohar Max are integrated with Anemoi’s proprietary folding deployment system, enabling each sail to transition to a horizontal position during port manoeuvres or when passing under height-restricted structures. This adaptive design reduces air draught limitations, optimising vessel clearance and cargo-handling efficiency.

As the maritime sector works to reduce its emissions, the International Maritime Organisation is targeting at least a 20% to 30% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions from shipping by 2030, with net-zero emissions targeted by or around 2050. Improving vessel efficiency remains a critical part of this transition, particularly in long-haul, high-capacity maritime transport. The integration of Rotor Sail technology on Sohar Max advances this effort at Valemax scale, where Asyad Shipping’s investment in advanced technology and strategic partnerships is supporting emissions mitigation while strengthening Oman’s position as a global logistics hub.

Since the Rotor Sail system was installed in October 2024, independent analysis by vessel-performance specialist Enerva Marine has recorded reductions in main-engine fuel consumption ranging from 14% to 31% against pre-installation voyage performance, with annual fuel-cost savings exceeding US$1 million. The two-year operating record establishes a credible performance benchmark for wind-assisted propulsion within Vale and Asyad Shipping’s broader work on vessel efficiency.

The Sohar Max installation is part of a series of six technology pilot agreements between Vale and Asyad Shipping across four vessels leased by Vale. Undertaken as part of Vale’s Ecoshipping program, the projects have tested a range of technologies in commercial service, from coatings and hydrodynamic devices to energy-management systems and wind-assisted propulsion. Together, the initiatives are advancing the application of vessel-efficiency technologies across Vale’s maritime transportation activities, with the aim of reducing fuel consumption and emissions from iron ore transportation globally.
